Colorado Springs Getaway

IMG_20180315_075515_576This Spring Break we wanted to go someplace beautiful but not to far from home.  It was too expensive to fly so we decided that we’d drive. This is no easy feat because it takes 8 hours just to drive across Texas.  We pulled up a map and began to look at the giant state of Texas and it’s neighboring states.  Our eyes and hearts were drawn to Colorado.  After chatting with a few friends, researching the internet, and checking our schedules we booked our trip for Colorado Springs.

Why Visit Colorado Springs?

  1. Garden of the Gods– Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark. Imagine dramatic views, 300′ towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies.  Entrance is free!  We packed a lunch and wandered the easy paths that meander around giant rock formations. Wear comfortable shoes, take the family, and visit this great landform right within the city of Colorado Springs.IMG_20180315_165916_727JG_04597-01JG_04855-01IMG_20180316_084728_026
  2. Cave of the Winds– is magical!  You can take  a 45 minute walking tour for beginning cavers and families. Our knowledgeable tour guides discuss cave history and geology and answer questions as you explore twisting paths under the mountain. Bring a jacket.  It’s chilly in there!IMG_20180316_182201_701
  3. Pike’s Peak– Oh my goodness. It was cold up there, but so beautiful. This is an excellent place to visit with small children.  You can drive almost to the top and very little walking is required to see the peak!  Be sure you pack a lunch before heading towards the peak. It is chilly up there year around, but very cold during winter and early spring.  It was 15 degrees at the top! (Please arrive before 3pm, or you won’t be allowed to enter the park. We didn’t know this and had to come back the next day.)IMG_20180317_083751_620IMG_20180319_103833_169IMG_20180317_091010_210IMG_20180317_091010_207
  4. Manitou Springs -The Historic Downtown Manitou Springs is an artist’s enclave featuring time-honored art galleries, street performers, creek-side restaurants and boutique stores. Enjoy a free concert at the town’s central Soda Springs Park, or take the kids fishing at Schryver Park, a shady oasis with an indoor pool and picnic area. We loved strolling up and down this cute little town.  It’ a great place for to wander on a carefree afternoon.  And if you have kiddos in two there are many playgrounds and arcades for them to burn off some energy.IMG_20180317_182906_046
  5. Manitou Cliff Dewllings– We enjoyed exploring the fascinating architecture of the ancient Anasazi at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. There are also two museums featuring cultural displays all overlooking the historic town of Manitou Springs, CO.  Jocelyn couldn’t get enough of the giant TeePee, an exhibit set up to allow children to compare the cliff dwellings to the TeePees. TIP: Go online to find coupons before visiting here!JG_04986-01IMG_20180318_102655_369IMG_20180318_102655_370
  6. 2 hours from Ski Towns of Dillon, Friso, Breckenride, Keystone, and Silverton.  Before leaving the great state of Colorado we vented to Friso to visit their adventure park. (Make your reservations before you go!)  We played in the hamster ball for a good half hour.  However, we really wanted to slide.  It was sold out. So we bought a tube from Walmart, used the free sliding hill outside of the Frisco Adventure Park, and had the time of our lives sliding the afternoon away!IMG_20180317_090208_769IMG_20180320_105608_819IMG_20180320_105608_823
