New Braunfels, TX – Weekend Getaway

Most people only think of floating the Comal River on a hot summer day whenever New Braunfels is mentioned. In reality, this lovely small town has much to offer all year long. New Braunfels, Texas is a great destination in the cooler months of the year offering a variety of shops, eateries, bars, live music venues, salons, and attractions. Centrally located between Austin and San Antonio, New Braunfels is easy to get to and offers a vast number of things to do for a perfect weekend getaway. So my friend Samantha and I, choose to visit New Braunfels, Texas for a much-needed girls’ getaway. It was the first trip I’ve taken without my husband and our two children. Read on the learn where to stay, where to eat, what to do, and places to shop.

  1. Where to Stay

Whether it’s views of the river or historic property in downtown or Gruene, New Braunfels’ boutique hotels and accommodations provide the perfect backdrop for a girlfriend’s getaway. For our Girls’ Weekend, we stayed at SchlitterStein Lofts- which is operated by The Resort at Schlitterbahn. The SchlitterStein Lofts are an upscale retreat hidden by the river and close to downtown New Braunfels. If your vacation plans include more than swimming at Schlitterbahn water park, the SchlitterStein Lofts are a great place to stay for everything the Hill Country has to offer. Each loft has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and accommodates up to 6 people thanks to the comfortable leather sofa that turns into two twin beds. A washer/dryer is a great added bonus to make this destination your home away from home.

2. Where to Eat

The food possibilities are endless in the New Braunfels so I’ll narrow it down to my favorites.

Huisache Grill -It’s a quaint bistro serving regionally inspired creative contemporary cruising with fresh regional ingredients. You will love this spot for lunch.

Gristmill River Restaurant – Located beneath Gruene’s landmark water tower, in the ruins of an 1878 cotton gin, overlooking the Guadalupe River, the Historic Gristmill has been considered one of the most unique dining spots in Texas for nearly half a century. A rare combination of history, location, and turn-of-the-century architecture create the Gristmill’s legendary Texas experience. Serving fresh fish, succulent chicken, thick steaks, and big juicy burgers, plus a complementary array of salads, appetizers, and veggies. You’ll want to make reservations!

La Cosecha – If you are a bunch lover, go here! La Cosecha is a vibrant destination featuring upscale Mexican food, plus a bar, happy hour & Sunday brunch. It has the very best “Mexican Toast” I have ever tasted. Please, please, please do not skip this spot!!

Cantina del Rio – If you’re looking for a casual environment along with delicious food, I recommended Cantina Del Rio. The Cantina is a bright-hued bungalow near the river, serving tacos, burgers & pizza with frosty drinks. They offer a flight of margaritas so you can choose which flavor you like best.

Buttermilk Cafe– The Buttermilk Cafe is Chef Carol’s take on comfort food with an upscale twist. The aromas and flavors conjure up memories of family feasts, filled with good food prepared by loving hands. C’mon by cheerful, casual kitchen offering gourmet takes on homestyle American breakfast & lunch dishes. Tripadvisor recommends!

Krause’s Cafe & Biergarten – New Braunfels, Texas was founded and settled by Germans in 1845. That rich heritage and culture live on, especially in Krause’s Cafe. With live entertainment, unique community events, 100+ beers, and an impressive German American menu, Krause’s is a local treasure. From schnitzels and bratwurst with sauerkraut to pretzels and potato soup, our menu offers a taste of Germany deep in the heart of the Lone Star State.

3. What To Do

Gruene Market Days is a unique artisan market held in Historic Gruene, Texas the 3rd weekend of each month Feb-Nov, and the 1st weekend of Dec. A nice place to go with the dog, browse the market of handmade items, listen to some music, buy some local produce and check out some of the local stores.

Gruene Hall– built in 1878, is a live music venue and Texas’ oldest continually operating dance hall. They have live music every day of the year. We enjoyed seeing LeAnn Rimes perform at this venue.

Walking Tour of downtown New Braunfels, TX

Water 2 Wine – An actual operating winery where all of our wines are blended, oaked, and fermented on-site. Come in and do a tasting, buy a bottle, or even make your own “batch” of wine with your own personalized wine label. We loved doing this.

4. Shopping

The Local– the cutest clothing boutique you’ll ever see!

Staunch Traditional Outfitters– provides trending headwear and clothing for the modern or old. Stop by the storefront this weekend to see the newest apparel.
