Maxi Dresses- How to Choose Them

IMG_20160514_145854

My favorite thing to wear are dresses, especially Maxi dresses.  They are floor length and I rarely have to worry about “sitting pretty”. They are effortless-an entire outfit all by itself, and oh so CHIC! Here are a few tips to help you choose a dress to suit your body type.

Athletic/Boyish Frame: Tube like, column style, thin strapped dresses allow you to how of your toned arms, and mask a boyish shape. A form fitting dress just may be perfect for you, making you appear tall and elegant. A slit works well, but make sure that it isn’t too high.

Busty Ladies: Look for a V-neck maxi dress, to avoid looking top heavy.  You want there to be a separation between your breast, and not appear as if they’ve merged together. If the v neck is too low, consider sewing in fabric panel, or wearing a camisole underneath.

Full Figure: To avoid looking as if you’re wearing a nightgown, choose a dress that hits at your natural waist, and has definite shape.  Don’t be afraid to belt your maxi dress.

Short Frames: Choose the dress that best suit your frame, and have it hemmed to your proper height.  Most dry cleaners have a seamstress or tailor who can easily do this for you, if you are unable to do it yourself.

Tall & Slender: Make sure that you choose a dress that has a definite waist.  Otherwise, you can appear more willowy and too thin. Don’t be afraid to belt your dress.

Prints: Head to toe prints have the potential for looking too busy.  Keep it balanced it up by keeping your accessories, like a handbag, belt, or shoes- a solid color.  On the reverse, if your maxi dress is solid in color, add printed accessories to keep it interesting.

As always, make sure that you wear the proper undergarments beneath your maxi dress.  A slip is often necessary due to the thin nature of the dress.

I hope this gets you started in the right direction.  Thanks for reading! Stay Chic!
